Supporting Early Years – Hearing Impairment (HI)

Adults support children with Hearing Impairment (HI) through:

Using simple short sentences to build vocabulary.
Sensitivity to the child’s wish to contribute and give them time to respond to reinforce listening/attention.
Providing additional activities to build on the child’s interests and extend their learning.
Supporting the child’s friendships and emotional learning with Social Stories.
Ensuring background noise is reduced with good acoustics in the indoor environment.
Ensuring the child is able to sit near them during whole/small group experiences.
Creating an ILDP (Individual Learning and Development Plan –ILDPs (Individual Learning Development Plans) – Family Hub (torbayfamilyhub.org.uk)) to support child if they need support making progress across seven areas of learning and review it regularly with family and other professionals. Applying for ALFI (Activity Led Funding for Inclusion) if additional support is needed Early Years additional funding for children with SEND (ALFI and DAF) – Family Hub (torbayfamilyhub.org.uk).
