Any visual communication system using signing, objects, pictures, photos or symbol pictures can be used to provide an alternative or augmentative (AAC) way of communicating with others. AAC can break down steps of an activity or routine throughout the day and offer choices for a child. AAC helps aid understanding for the child and reduce anxiety about what is happening next and to offer choices and control for the child. AAC can provide a way for the child to express themselves more easily.
Widgit symbols and charts are available through signing up to WidgitOnline Widgit Online. Makaton signing can be learnt through accessing the Makaton Library here The Makaton Library – About Makaton
It is important to decide which type of symbols to use when creating visual communication systems and AAC. The Symbol Ladder will help give you an idea of how symbols develop from concrete referencing to a more abstract representation of an idea
