Top Tips Series: Help your child prepare for starting reception

Children are unique and will develop at their own pace. Parents can help their child to be ready to start school by promoting personal, social and emotional skills which results in independent and curious learners.

  • Good morning and night time routines – Children need a good morning and bedtime routine to allow them to be awake and ready to learn through the day. Establishing good calm bedtime routines with a bath and story time and morning routines to aid a child to brush teeth and hair requires some effort, time and patience.
  • Healthy children – It is important that children eat breakfast before school and eating healthy meals together with your child will encourage them to try a variety of foods and practice using cutlery.  Make sure that your child attends all health checks and immunisations so they are fit and healthy.
  • Independent children – Model and give your child clear instructions to follow to: Put on their own coat and shoes with Velcro fastening; Go to the toilet; Wash hands after toilet and before eating; Feed themselves and drink from a cup. Children need lots of practice so start early.
  • A child who can communicate their needs to an adult – In order for your child to be happy away from you they need to feel safe and be able to ask for help if they need anything or feel unwell. Talk, read and sing with your child as this will develop their speaking and listening skills. Help your child understand questions and respond to instructions through games and books.
  • Social, playful and curious children – Children learn about the world around them through their senses. We want children to feel confident to learn and explore new things. Providing children with different play opportunities and experiences will foster their curiosity and increase their confidence. Follow your child’s lead and encourage, answer and ask open ended questions. You can help your child learn how to turn take and share through pretend play and this will help them when playing alongside others.
