Top Tips Series: Haircare for children with sensory needs
Wash hair less often – use a dry shampoo to refresh.
Use a bath visor to avoid getting water on the face.
Try using a bath rather than a shower.
Use a rinse cup, rather than making your child tilt their head back.
Use a tangle teaser or wet brush to prevent heavy pressure and snagging /pulling your child’s hair.
Give them control. Self-administered touch feels different than someone else touching us. Encourage them to brush their own hair when appropriate. This also helps to encourage their independence.
Don’t expect your child to sit still while you comb or style their hair. Give them a fidget to play with or a weighted lap pad. Let them play Lego or watch TV or both. It won’t be easy for you to comb hair on a moving target, but it will be less stressful if they are less upset.
Use a visual timer to inform your child how long they need to endure having their hair brushed/washed.
