Information and advice on language development and what to expect around the age of 18

Remember, not all children develop at the same rate but during this time I will:

  • Follow complex instructions and directions
  • Use a range of arguments to persuade others
  • Understand words that are used in questions in exams and the classroom eg evaluate, compile
  • Use a wide range of vocabulary
  • Talk using longer sentences (average length of 9-13 words)
  • Use more advanced ‘connecting’ words to make complex sentences
  • Switch easily between informal and formal styles of talking
  • Understand sarcasm by the situation and without the need for a sarcastic tone of voice. Can use sarcasm in humour
  • Take part in group social interactions, knowing appropriate times to join in conversations

If you have any concerns, talk to your school nurse, GP, school/setting practitioner
