Adult learning

Adults with Special Educational Needs and/or Disabilities (SEND) may want to continue going on courses to learn new skills and gain knowledge about subjects they are interested in.

Functional Skills Courses in English and Maths, up to GCSE level, and basic ICT skills are usually free. Other further education courses are free until the age of 19, up to level 3. If a young person has an EHCP and needs longer time to complete their education, the course may be fully funded until they are 25 years old, if the course meets the targets outlined in their plan and the course is below level 4. This position does not mean that there is an automatic entitlement to continued support at age 19 or an expectation that those with an EHC plan should all remain in education until age 25. A Local Authority may cease a plan for a 19- to 25-year-old if it decides that it is no longer necessary for the EHC plan to be maintained.
